Chemistry
COURSE OVERVIEW: The course will cover concepts in atomic theory, chemical reactions, bonding, chemical formulae, oxidation/reduction reactions, reaction rates, acid-base reactions, and organic chemistry. This will be accomplished through written work, experiments, films, and tests.BENCHMARKS: CIM COMMON CURRICULUM GOALS: 1. Analyze the effects of various factors
on chemical reactions. CONTENT STANDARDS: 1. Describe ways in which chemical reactions can be speeded up such as by heating, stirring solutions, increasing the concentration of reactants or their surface area, adding catalysts.2. Read and interpret the periodic table including element symbols, atomic number and atomic mass. 3. Describe a chemical reaction in terms of conservation of mass. 4. Based on observations and scientific concepts, ask questions that can be answered or tested through scientific investigations. 5. Design an investigation that provides sufficient data to answer a question. 6. Collect, organize and display sufficient data to facilitate scientific analysis and interpretation. 7. Summarize and analyze data, evaluating sources of error or bias. Propose explanations that are supported by data and knowledge of scientific terminology. INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS:
