PHASE II
http://www.honkernet.net/honkertech/honker_handheld_project__phase_ii.htm
GOAL
- Handheld technologies are changing the way people
access and work with information. These devices are becoming smaller,
cheaper, better, and more connected. Educators and students need to be
taking advantage of these emerging technologies to enhance lifelong
learning. Through the Honker Handheld Project, the classes of 2007 and
2008, HonkerTech agents, and AHS Staff will facilitate integration of
handhelds into the lives of AHS students.
- What's the catch… USE IT! That is what it is for! And
"You break it… You fix it"
PLAN
- Purchase Handheld Sony PEG NX60s and PEG NX80s through
grants from HonkerTech and Arlington School District.
- Promote handheld activities in science and technology
classes through HonkerTech, Biology, and Physical Science. Other classes
will try to incorporate Handhelds into daily activities.
- Utilize the NW handheld project to encourage projects
and applications around the use of handheld computers.
- Participants will be expected to utilize the day
planner, documents to go, hotsynch, backup, and to do list features as well
as the personal organizer features in their PDAs. Music players, added
applications, and other additional hardware are optional. Points will be
assigned to their respective Science or HonkerTech Class based on use and
integration into the participants life. A scoring guide will outline the
details.
EQUIPMENT
- Sony PEG NX60s, Sony PEG NX80s, docking stations, and
software will be assigned to each participant. Additional hardware, memory,
software are the responsibility of the participant.
- The participant assumes responsibility for proper
caring and feeding of their handheld. Damage due to wear and tear, abuse,
or neglect will be the responsibility of the assigned participant to repair
or replace their handheld. This policy is similar to the current text book
assignment expectation.
- Loss, Damage, or destruction is not covered by the
warranty is the responsibility of the participant to repair or replace the
handheld with the same model or newer. This value may approach $350
depending on availability of replacement PDAs.
- If a participant Leaves AHS before they graduate, the
handheld must be returned upon checkout to AHS for reassignment.
- A participant may purchase their handheld from AHS May
1st of their graduating year based on the following
values: Class of 2004 $200 Class of 2005 $150
Class of
2006 $125 Class of 2007 $100
Class of
2008 $100
- Funds generated from the purchase program will go
towards replacement/additional handhelds and support equipment.
FUTURE
- Based on the success and/or failure of Phase II of
this program, grant monies will be pursued to fund the additional handheld
computers to provide handhelds to the class of 2009 in the Fall of 2005.
