Arlington Schools
are Committed to Excellence:
Excellence can be
attained if you care more than others think is wise, risk more than others think
is safe, dream more than others think is practical, and expect more than others
think is possible.
I would like to Welcome you to the Arlington School District’s Superintendent web page. The Arlington School District is made up of two schools: the Arlington Elementary School (grades k-8) and the Arlington High School (grades 9-12). Arlington, Oregon is located about 50 miles from The Dalles, Oregon and 60 miles from Hermiston, Oregon on I-84. We are right on the Columbia River where Lewis and Clark traveled to the Pacific Ocean 200 years ago. Arlington is also just off the Old Oregon Trail. The Arlington schools serve about 130 students in grades K-12. Arlington is one of two school districts in Gilliam County. The high school mascot is the “Honkers,” which is named for the Canadian Geese that frequent the area in the fall and spring. We are proud of our small rural school tradition and invite you to become more acquainted with our schools and programs as you visit our web pages. The web pages are designed and maintained by our students through HonkerTech. HonkerTech also operates a local Internet access student operated business. In addition to the web pages, the students also maintain HonkerVision, a local, school-owned and operated television channel on the local cable television network.
Arlington is currently at the east end of the Columbia Gorge and offers excellent wind surfing. A new 9-hole golf course was recently completed. The city park is a frequent visitors stop and a great place to relax, swim or fish. Arlington is also known as the hometown of “Doc” Severenson, the famous band leader from the Johnny Carson “Tonight Show.” Arlington features the “Big River Band Festival” the third weekend in June each year. The community also turns out for the May Day Celebration, which features a May Day Parade and Music Concert at the school.
As Superintendent and Principal of the Arlington Schools, I strive to promote quality educational programs in small rural schools. My goals are to:
Motivate, embrace and Inspire quality-learning environments
Provide and support safe and secure learning environments
Develop and maintain positive communications, commitment and teamwork
Set and maintain high educational standards
District Mission: The Arlington School/Community Youth Goal is to create an innovative educational system that graduates students with the academic background, social skills, moral character, self-esteem, and confidence to become positive, productive members of society.
The school district operates on a General Fund budget of just under 3 million dollars. The district employees 12 teachers, 14 classified, a school counselor, a deputy clerk and superintendent/principal. The North Central ESD provides a special education teacher, part-time speech and language specialist, and technology support staff to the district in addition to other services including print and media.
Please see the Calendar link to see what is currently happening in the school district and at the schools. This link also has a monthly message from the Superintendent. We welcome visitors, so if you are in the area, please stop by and visit our schools in person.
